How to Store Tyres Properly

Storing a spare set — winter wheels, off-road tyres, or a new set bought on offer? Store them right and they'll be perfect when you need them.

The essentials

• Cool and dark: heat and UV age rubber. Avoid direct sun and hot rooms.
• Away from chemicals: oils, solvents and ozone from electric motors degrade rubber.
• Clean and dry: wash off brake dust and road grime first.
• Position: tyres on rims — stack flat or hang. Tyres without rims — stand upright and rotate occasionally to avoid flat spots.

Cover them or use tyre bags to keep dust and light off. Stored well, tyres keep for years; stored in a hot sunny yard, they crack in months.
