Off-Road Tyre Guide: H/T vs A/T vs M/T

Highway-terrain (H/T), all-terrain (A/T) or mud-terrain (M/T)? Choosing the wrong one costs you comfort, fuel or capability. Here's how to decide.

Highway Terrain (H/T)

Quiet, comfortable, fuel-efficient and long-lasting on tarmac. Ideal for a Harrier, X-Trail or Prado that mostly does town and highway with the occasional smooth murram road.

All Terrain (A/T)

The Kenyan sweet spot. Tougher sidewalls and more aggressive tread handle murram, gravel, wet grass and the odd rocky track, while still behaving on tarmac. Perfect for Prado, Hilux and Land Cruiser owners who go upcountry, to the Mara, or to the farm.

Mud Terrain (M/T)

Big blocky tread for serious mud, rock and deep off-road. Noisy, thirstier and shorter-lived on tarmac — only worth it if you genuinely go where nothing else will.

Our advice

For most Kenyan 4x4 owners, a good A/T (BFGoodrich KO2, Falken Wildpeak, or a value option) is the best all-round choice. Tell us where you actually drive and we'll match it.
