Matatu Tyre Rules & NTSA Compliance

For PSV operators, tyres aren't just a running cost — they're a compliance and safety issue that NTSA inspects and enforces.

Load rating

Matatus and buses must run tyres with a load index rated for a full, loaded vehicle. Fitting passenger-grade or under-rated tyres to a 14- or 33-seater is both unsafe and an inspection failure.

Tread depth

Keep well above the 1.6mm minimum — on a heavy, hard-working PSV, replace earlier. Bald or unevenly worn tyres are an instant inspection issue and a serious wet-road risk with a full load.

Condition

No cuts, bulges, exposed cords or dangerous repairs. Steer and drive positions have different demands — we fit the right pattern to each axle.
