How to Read Your Tyre Size

Every tyre has its size stamped on the sidewall. Once you can read it, you never have to guess again. Take a common example: 195/65R15 91H.

Breaking down the numbers

• 195 — the tread width in millimetres, from one edge to the other.
• 65 — the aspect ratio: the sidewall height is 65% of the width. A lower number means a shorter, sportier sidewall.
• R — radial construction (virtually every modern car tyre).
• 15 — the rim diameter in inches. This must match your wheel exactly.
• 91 — the load index (how much weight each tyre can carry).
• H — the speed rating (the maximum safe speed for the tyre).

Why it matters in Kenya

Fitting the wrong width or profile changes your speedometer reading, your ground clearance and how the car handles on wet Nairobi roads. Sticking to your manufacturer's size — printed on a sticker in the driver's door jamb — keeps the car safe and your insurance valid.
